On 21st February 2012 the first Green Gas Grids workshop took place in Brussels. The aim of the meeting was to discuss different possibilities, measures and barriers of international trade of biomethane. The workshop was attended by 40 participants from industry sector, European institutions, NGOs and research institutes from over 13 countries.

The speakers focused on labeling and certification systems and good practice examples from Denmark, Netherlands and Switzerland were presented. A very important issue of the workshop was to address importance of setting a common standardization system for biomethane injection into gas grid. Finally, aspects of suitability criteria for solid and gaseous biomass were expressed in view of EU legislation and future market development.

All agreed that only with collaboration of all parties and stakeholders it will be possible to set a certification system, meet sustainability criteria and to start trading internationally. Therefore the GGG project initiates discussions among international bodies and pushes first steps towards biomethane market development.
