Biomethane tracking and certification

The Green Gas Certification Scheme (GGCS) is an initiative run by Renewable Energy Assurance Ltd (REAL) to track biomethane from the anaerobic digestion (AD) plant through the gas grid to where it's used to heat homes and fuel vehicles. The GGCS will be a web-based system that tracks green gas from injection into the grid through to its use in homes or businesses. By tracking the gas on a contractual basis, rather than using physical flow, the GGCS will show that each unit of renewable gas injected into the grid will displace the need for a unit of fossil gas.

The Biomethane Certification Scheme (BMCS), which is supported by The Anaerobic Digestion and Biogas Association, is an independent certification scheme established to issue biomethane guarantee of origin certificates and to provide a web-based platform to trade them on. The scheme allows end users to decarbonise their gas supply by purchasing Biomethane Certificates direct from biomethane producers, without the need to enter into a green tariff with their energy supplier. The consumer can continue with their existing gas supply contract and buy the certificates to evidence that they have bought biomethane that was injected into the UK gas grid or used as a transport fuel. The BMCS has been established by Green Gas Trading Limited, whose shareholders comprise a wide range of entities in the biomethane industry and environmental investors.
